Camas tallied 21 unanswered points in response to Skyview’s opening score and took a 21-3 lead into the final frame en route to an eventual 21-9 victory over the Storm in a league game at Doc Harris Stadium.
An opening drive special teams turnover by the Papermakers led to an ominous feeling when Camas hosted Skyview in the season league opener. Thankfully the Camas Defense flexed their muscles and forced a Storm Field Goal and only a 3-0 hole to dig out of. That is exactly what Camas did.
Skyview’s high powered offense started at the Camas 17 following a blocked punt. After stalling at the 8, the Storm settled for a 26-yard field goal and a quick 3 point lead. The game would be controlled by Camas for the remainder of the game.
On the second snap of the 2nd quarter, Camas rolled the dice on a 4th and 12 at the Strom 26. The risk paid off as QB Jake Davidson hit WR Anthony Forner down the middle giving Camas a 7-3 lead. Davidson ended the night going just 10-15 for 132 passing yards and the one touchdown. This was not a surprise as the Skyview defense had only allowed 13 points in their first 6 games, including posting four shutouts. However the Camas run game and defense more than filled in for the lower than average passing attack.
Running Back Titan Brody carried the bulk of the load, rushing 23 times for 105 yards, while RB Beau Harlin rushed for 59 yards on 9 carries, including rushing touchdowns in both the 2nd and 3rd quarter to put Camas up 18 heading into the final 12 minutes of the game.
Skyview had averaged over 42 points per game on offense through their first 6 games, all wins entering tonight’s contest. An 8-play, 79 yard drive that took up most of the 4th quarter finally saw the Storm find the end zone. Fortunately it was too little, too late as Camas ran out the final 2:43 seconds of game clock on seven consecutive runs.
Camas Defense forced 2 fumbles in the game, including a second quarter forced fumble and fumble recovery by DT Ayden Jones as Skyview had reached midfield. Safety Trenton Swanson also forced an interception to squelch a late 2nd quarter Skyview scoring threat.
The win marks the 13th consecutive victory for Camas over their rival Skyview dating back to 2012. Camas holds a 14-4 all-time record against the Storm.
The Papermakers improved to 6-1 on the season and start out the 4A GSHL league schedule 1-0. Camas will travel to McKenzie Stadium Friday as they continue league play vs rival Union.
